Lowe’s sells a great book on container gardening published by Sunset and that is how I got started. Although now I live on about an acre, I started gardening in containers on an enclosed condo patio. I still have over 200 plants growing in containers in my yard, including herbs, citrus and veggies. Tomatoes, peppers and herbs are great to grow in containers. I grow 5 different varieties of tomatoes, 3 pepper varieties and a host of herbs like thyme, sage, chives, basil, 2 kinds of oregano, tarragon, dill, mint, chamomile…and some others I don’t remember right now. I found growing vine plants like cucumber, pumpkin and squash is a little tricky in containers, but they do show you how in the Sunset book. For free advice on gardening in containers in your zone, you can contact a master gardener or the county agricultural extension.

Container vegetable gardening. Help!!?

I live in N-E Indiana and plan on growing a few vegetables (ie, beefsteak tomatoes, hot peppers etc.) in containers outside. I am thinking about using some Miracle-Gro Organic Choice Potting Mix 16 Qt but am not sure how much I’ll need as I am new to this. I have been informed that I should use 5 Gal containers for the tomatoes and 2 to 3 Gal for the peppers. They sale the potting mix that I’m wanting to use in 16 Qt bags. I guess what I want to know is how many bag’s will it take to fill one 5 Gal container? Now I know that 16 Qt = 4 Gal but will one 16 Qt bag be enough per 5 Gal container? Thank you guys very much for any help you can offer on this subject, I am sooooooo lost here : (

Just get a big pot. (larger for the tomatoes and smaller for peppers) and fill i up. The larger the better because the roots will be bound if you don’t have enough soil. I would do AT LEAST 5 gal for the tomatoes.
Hummingbirds love gladiolas, but as a bulb plant, it can be started out side. Lots of butterflies like marigolds, and you can start those inside. The only containered fruits ive seen do well are lemons and limes, but the critters would leave those alone anyway. Strawberries start we in containers, but need large areas of soil to propagate well. If started in a large enough pot, most types of lettuce do ok.

Number One Fan answers:

Almost anything can be grown in a container. Rule of thumb, the larger the plant will get, larger the root system, the bigger the container. Grren onions do okay in smaller ones; white onions and potatoes should be planted in the ground. Peppers should have a planter that they can be staked in. Tomatoes and beans can be taught to trellis in larger pots. Squash need to sprawl usually and strawberries do fantastic in pots.

Vegetable garden in Oregon? Partial sunlight, what should I plant?

Number One Fan answers:

The old adage is plant what you like to eat but lets first narrow the possibilities.

Western Oregon is not known for it’s large number of bright sunny days. Couple that with a partially shady location and it would be difficult be very successful with sun loving peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, beans, squash or corn.

Most greens should do well.

Swiss Chard (Beta vulgaris) is my favorite green. It lasts all summer and into the next spring, needs little care and has a taste that is agreeable to most people. There are also a variety of colorful chards available that tend to be less robust but equally tasty. I would recommend Fordhook Giant for a standard large leafed chard and Perpetual Spinach for an outstanding spinach substitute that will not bolt all summer long.

Brassicas rapa (the Asian cabbages like bok choy, tatsoi, mizuna, komasuna) and Brassica juncea (indian mustards like “giant purple”, “green wave” and Osaka) are both still a bit prone to bolting (going to seed) this time of year due to temperature and day length. So if you plant them, plant small ones or better yet start them from seed, not the overgrown starts you see at nurseries.

It might be a bit late to start spinach. By the time it really starts going, the heat of summer will be kicking in and it will tend to want to go to seed. Your partial shade might help you a bit with an early summer crop.

If you don’t have too much shade you can try peas. Snow peas like “Oregon Giant” should produce into summer.

Arugula will grow anywhere. Buy the biggest seed pack you can find (the ones from Italy are huge) and densely plant a 1 or 2 foot row per person every few of weeks. It grows really fast and lets you get a couple cuttings off of it before going to seed. Plant a little, often.

Any lettuce should do fine.

Generally speaking, if you buy seed for planting in Western Oregon go with one of the companies that specialize in the region like Territorial Seed, Nichols Garden Nursery. You would be hard pressed to find a variety in their listings that does not do well here.

there trees. I use – household ammonia -. I simply pore a little near my younger trees + up wend from the aria I want to protect. It smells like
urine from a really big cat. If you use it for a vegetables garden be
careful and not get it close to your plants as even the fumes will

You can grow a garden pretty much anywhere in the U.S. It’s just a matter of timing and choosing plants that will flourish in your conditions. I live in Southern New Jersey, near Philadelphia, and I have a beautiful vegetable garden every year. I grow tomatoes, beans, corn, onions, garlic, broccoli, potatoes, all kinds of peppers, squash, spinach, chard, melons and herbs. I also have blueberry bushes, raspberries and blackberries, pears and apple in the yard. They don’t call this the Garden State for nothing. ; )

Id like to know things like what specific soil, sun, and most importantly, growing from seed. A good reference book for flowers , I found was the A- Z guide to growing plants from seed to bloom. I found her sister book not nearly as thorough, and couldnt find many plants. Are there any really good reference books for growing your own food plants. …thank you ,

Idiots love media attention stuff.?

Personally every one loves a bit of gossip but we alot of us think why do we care more about what a celeb has wore twice then flood victims in poorer countries etc.? So when I have kids I’m moving to the south part of a hot country with my husband and grow my own vegetables(eat off the land), just read books have no tv or computer , build stuff and have 4 kids and teach them to do the same. I won’t raise them any religion I shall let them pick their own when they reach 22 and move out on their own after being home schooled their whole lives. There shall be no newspapers or magazines shall be banned from the house and my children shall play with each other on the big farm land. It’s getting to the stage I’m more less likely to do that as society is getting sicker as the day goes by. I know I’m only 17 but when I reach 34 that’s when it’s all gonna kick off. I mean think of all the msg and fertilisers in your food from so called organic farms and Global warming and tv bitchiness telling us we have to act this way to get ahead in life it’s all bull!. This isn’t really a question it’s more of a philosophy in which you can comment on or a philosophy of life you could follow if you wanted to.

Giving up vegetarianism?

I’m going back to my omnivorous diet. I have been tempted by desires to eat flesh.
Yesterday I thought about it, but I had a piece of fish instead, hope it was wild caught fish, I hate that farmed stuff, just don’t know what they feed them, prob baby roosters.
Today I just kept thinking of my favourite chicken dish, tandoori murgha & my mouth kept watering.
I might tell myself one thing, but my body betrayed me. On friday I had corn for dinner, I thought that would be a good start to my new vegetreian lifestyle, especially since I’d had chicken for lunch.
So Yesterday I was a pesceterian, friday I was a vegeterian, and today I am too, until I eat my dinner which is in the oven.
So is it okay to be a part time vegeterian? Is there a rule book or a code that says once I eat meat I’ve blown it?
I’d like to be a caring sensitive person who causes no harm to fellow living beings, but why did they have to make chickens so tasty?
I think it wood be impossible to live a life where no harm is done to any organism, I would have to make a judgement as to what creatures rate a protected life & which are merely expendable.
I personally feel anything smaller than a mouse is expendable, that way we can selectively cull with impugnity any species which we choose to without feeling guilty.
I don’t know if just giving up meat is enough either, there are serious consequences to the environment from the harvest & distribution of vegetables, pesticides, fertilisers, erosion..
I think the safest thing wod be to live again 100 years ago, when you raised your own animals & grew your own vegetables.

Hi Far Canal,

Being pescetarian is also being vegetarian. Vegetarianism is different from veganism. I think there’s nothing wrong if you eat fish once in a while. Even vegetables are living things; I think it’s a question of the organism’s awareness on its surroundings and its feelings / consciousness toward others that make it really alive.
Can loneliness cause depression?

I wonder if you have had personal experiences with that problem. I am married but my husband drives truck over the road, he’s gone 3-4 weeks, spends 2-3 days home when he comes. Really when he’s home, he spends most of his time in the computer. I do EVERYTHING when he’s gone, I pay ALL the bills, I go grocery shopping, I keep our house very clean and organized, the yard mowed, put garbage out, wash the car every week, bathe our 2 dogs and take care of them, go to work everyday (I’m a CNA), fix things that break in my house, take care of the garden, grow vegetables and pick them, take care of myself physically (walk everyday, eat well, do my own nails, etc), read books, do my quilts, study (going to start my prereqs for nursing school soon), etc. I am not American, and I have no relatives in the country. We’ve been living in our place for 2 yrs now, I’ve tried making some good friends with some people from my church, but it seems that they have their own little groups. I try reaching out for them. On the weekend I get really really bad at being depressed and lonely, especially at night time. I leave the TV on for most afternoon on Saturdays and Sundays, at least I hear somebody talk. I hate total silence, unless I’m reading a book, but I still leave some kind of noise so I can think someone is around me. Some moments I like to stay by myself, I think it’s healthy to stay alone sometimes. But staying alone all the time and being rejected all the time by people kinda puts me down even worse. As I said, I am a CNA, and I take care of 2 Alzheimer’s patients in a home health setting right now, and it really makes me feel good to be helping them, as they appreciate my help and I learn a lot with them (patience, endurance, compassion, etc). But I would like to feel good in my personal life too! Don’t I have this right? What should I do to improve my loneliness/depression? I appreciate your honest and serious opinions. Thanks a lot.
Please, if you are going to tell me to find a man out there, refrain from answering. That’s not what I’m looking for, ok? I believe that happiness comes from within oneself, and that you have the right to preserve your dignity and self-respect.
Yes they have a rider program for spouses, I rode along with him for 2 months, but it’s not a life for me. It’s hard to spend at least 10 hours a day straight sitting and not being able to move around (low roof on the truck). You can’t cook your own food, you wind up eating junk food all the time (I gained 10 lbs in 2 months alone), and I have a job now. I don’t want to quit and I’m getting ready to start my prereqs for nursing school. I like my house a lot, I don’t think is fair for me to stop my whole life to live his lifestyle, you know? Also, I have lower back problem and am finally able to afford going to the chiropractor right now for treatment. I’m exercising, stretching, eating well, sleeping well, I feel good in this aspect now. And yes, I know about the lot lizards, like I said I rode in his truck for 2 months and i saw them all the time.
Well, I already do volunteer work for my church, I like it a lot. It gives meaning to my life. I am a generous person, yes. But sometimes it is good to hear that you are appreciated, by your own husband, mainly. Yes, it’s a one way relationship, you got it right. I feel vampirized. Yes, when he comes home he relaxes — too much, sometimes, I think — and he brings loads and loads of dirty clothes for me to wash too. When he leaves for work, he has some lunch packed (that lasts for about 2 days, he doesn’t have a fridge in his truck — no space), his clothes washed, his bedsheets washed, his hair cut (I cut his hair too, at home, in order to save money). I basically do EVERYTHING for him and he does nothing. I ask him to go for a walk with me, or to play a card game, or something, together. He expresses no interest in me, except when he comes home he wants to have his “due”, and when he’s done, he’s done, that’s it. I don’t even miss sex anymore, as I have learned to live without it.
Today I bought a 50 min DVD on latin dance. And I bought some gym equipment so I can do at home, besides my walking everyday. At least is something to burn calories and keep my mind on something good.

You already have improved it. You can show people, and your husband, that you can take care of yourself. And helping people with problems should be a blessing in disguise.
Your husband might not depend on you, but you are there for the people who really need you. You should find joy in knowing (without seeing it), that you have two very special friends that appreciate you.
Your relationship with your husband obviously isn’t healthy, the good part is you know you can make it own your own, most women can’t say that. You got it going for yourself, don’t lose it. Find the good in yourself, because, while I was reading it, I saw the good.
Keep it up, keep moving, don’t stop. You’re gonna make it.

I was looking for the same thing! Goggle companion planting and you will find good info on which plants to plant next to each other, but I never could find a good plan to use. Try drawing out your area and using the companion planting guides map out your own plan. Once you get started its actually not that hard to do. Plus you want to use a rotating plan and not plan the same plants on the same soil year after year. Different plants use different nutrients and have different diseases so rotating helps the soil replenish and keeps the bugs down. Its a good idea to have at least 3 years between plantings.
Good Luck!

Try using the Jiffy ‘greenhouse’ that you can get at Wal-mart to start your seedlings. They run about $6 for a 72 cell pack, and you can start more plants more cheaply this way and different varieties also.. Plants that you can start that grow well in this zone include: tomatoes, okra, eggplant, zucchini, bell peppers, herbs. A good source for seeds is Parks seeds (mail order). A good choice for tomatoes are the cherry type.

Could put it on top as mulch, and let it break down. Won’t cause any harm at all. Just a month past the date, eat it– the dates are to get people to buy more. If it tastes fresh it is fine. Oatmeal used to not have dates on it years ago since it keeps well for a long time.

Number One Fan answers:

Supplemented soil like Miracle Grow (MG) has additives that feed plants. If you leave the soil exposed with the MGin it, the MG will decompose on its own and the only ones benefitting from the MG will be bugs and bacteria.

MG is made from chemicals designed for quick absorption by the growing plants, so adding MG to the soil this far in advance does little good. By the time you add the seeds nine weeks from now, the MG will have lost almost half of its potency. MG is good for only three months, on average.

Number One Fan answers:

It depends on what you are growing. With root crops such as carrots, you need about 12″. For most flowers and above grownd crops such as tomatoes 6″ should do.

They sell soil by the cubic yard, so you need to take the length and with of the bed in feet and multiply them to get the square footage. Multiply the sq. Footage by the depth (use .5 for 6″ and 1 for 1 foot). This will give you cubic feet. Divide the cubic footage by 27 to get the amount of cubic yards of soil needed. So if you have a 4′ x 12′ raised bed 6″ deep, 4x12x.5 = 24 cubic feet divided by 27 =.889 cubic yards of soil.

Organic fertilizer, compost, mulch and of course, no pesticides.

When it comes to making some dirt properly for a vegetable bed, start by mixing 2 parts steer or horse manure, 1 part peat moss, 1 part sifted dirt from your yard or 1 part topsoil and 1/2 part perlite. I prefer to mix mine in a wheelbarrow, but hell, you can mix it directly in a vegetable or flower bed. Just be sure to till the soil a bit at the bottom of your bed before mixing in your prepared soil.

Also when planting either plants, flowers, vegetables, etc… Make a mixture of 1 – 2 tablespoons of fish emulsion (it comes in a 1 gallon jug) and 1 – 2 tablespoons of seaweed emulsion (it comes in a quart up to a 1 gal jug) with about a gallon or two of water in a watering can. Just water your plants or vegetables like you normally would at least once every 2 to 3 weeks. This will help to produce bigger yields and helps to promote stronger root growth.

Next when it comes to your flower beds or the bare soil around trees and somewhat later on when your vegetables begin to be more established, if it is possible, try using cedar bark as mulch. The finer the better. This helps alot with water retention in the soil, but cedar also helps as a natural pesticide that has no chemicals. And after a while the cedar bark will breakdown and become compost.

Next is composting. Dirt, organic matter, water aerating the compost regularly and watering. I prefer to compost in the ground as opposed to using a bin, or anything else. I dug two 4ft wide by 3 ft deep holes in my back yard, almost side by side. This allows me to have a constant supply of compost year in and year out. Plan on it taking anywhere from several months up to 18 months to make compost. You can add grass clippings, clean paper, apple cores, orange peels, etc… Just whatever you do, dont add anything that has come in contact with any meat products, or fish. As this will attract animals. I like to add a cheap bag of steer manure to the mix which helps with the breakdown of material….

Hit me up if you need any more advice….

Hello fellow Dallasite. Check the link for Texas A&M info. Covers everything about our area. Raised garden info is there among a bunch of other info.

I can tell you from experience, planting small tomato varieties will help you be successful. Large tomatoes take too much time to ripen before the heat in mid summer kills the plant. A really good producer with excellent taste is the Sun Gold tomato. And the Butterstick Yellow Zucchini grows well.

Soil amendment is key, so a raised bed with compost as the soil really helps as well.

Get out in the garden at least once a day and look at the plants and hand pick any bugs you find (I do this on several acres so anyone should be able to do this in a much smaller home garden),

Mulches will keep moisture in the soil, prevent lot of soil born diseases and keep the weeds down.

You will never succeed in keeping pests away unless you completely enclose your garden in a dome or something (and even than there will be things like aphids) but if you learn how to encourge beneficial insects and other critters into your yard you will have fewer and fewer problems with pests over the years.

Know that it takes 7 to 15 years to get an Organic garden balanced and where it should be. So over time as you learn what you are doing, your soil gets healthy and you eco-system in better balance your pest and disease problems will go way down and your yields way up.

A milk water solution works very well on Powder mildew but does have to be sprayed daily for at least a week.

Number One Fan answers:

Container gardening is a great way to have your own garden irrespective of soil space. Dwarf varieties of many vegatables grow quite well in containers as long as there’s enough space between them.

1. Beans, peas & tomatoes grow in the ground without taking up much space

2. Radishes, spinach, dwarf carrots & onions grow well in window boxes that are large and deep

Take a look at lasagna gardening & organic gardening for popular alternatives. The former utilizes a compost heap while the latter saves you the trouble of fertilizers & pesticides.

My family and I are sick of eating processed crap that has preservitives sprinkled on everything! So we wondering how you can grow a garden on a balcony or can you even do that? What plants grow better in pots. What kind of planting pots are available for this kind of venture? In this horrid economy iv found that its much cheaper and healthier to grow your own food and eat! So please any green thumbed people help me out here. I live in an upstairs apartment, but it has a nice size balcony that i never use. Thanx in advance.

Has anyone else about starting a victory garden?

With the price of food continuing to rise I read where in the 40s the government suggested victory gardens to grow your own vegetables and fruit because food was rationed. I found you could use a very small place(patio space if nothing else) and grow a lot more than you think. With about a $50 investment you can return 30 to 40 times that in grocery savings. One tomato plant(@ $3) in a flower pot filled with potting soil can give you as much as 10 pounds of tomatoes or more. At $2 a pound in the store you do the math and you’d see it is worth it. As a plus – no poisons sprayed on my vegetables!

www.livinghistoryfarm.org/farminginthe40s/crops_02.html

A fifty investment would give you a small patio garden – not just one tomato plant. get your containers at a dollar store and cheap potting soil at Walmart. The seeds are cheaper at Walmart too.

I want to start a vegetable and herb garden in my back yard, but I don’t konw what will grow the best in NYC?

I live in a Brownstone in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. I have noticed that a certain patch of grass in our back yard gets an excessive amount of light (about 8-10 hours depending). I have never had a garden but always wanted one and food is getting way expensive and I love to cook. So, I am wondering what types of fruits and veggies will grow the best in Brooklyn, NY. Any thoughts?

As mentioned above looking up your usda zone will help alot. BEcause of NYC proximity to the water the bouroghs and the city its self is probably a zone 7a maybe 7b in densely bulid up areas of the city. Try to look for the “NEW” 2006 usda map because it is based on more info in more cities over a longer peroid of time giving you an accurate zone.
Chives make great potted plants and will come up every year around know. They are mostly spring and early summer plants though becuase they droop and dry back in the NYC humidity and heat of the summer, but will come up next year for sure. Rosemary make great plants for the ground and will survive a NYC winter without much of a problem. If you plant in an area where it is windy in the winter than it will get damaged, but will come back. They may not survive if in pots all winter outdoors.

The next few will need to be replanted or brought in by frost.

BAsil make great shrubs and dont grow too tall, but if they do pruning can keep it nicely shaped. The basil will need to broung out aroung may in NYC and back in Mid october in NYC or early Nov depending on the first frost for that year. Tomatoes especially cherry tomatoes are great and although cherry tomatoes look bad by agust the blooms neve stop and you can be picking as many as 100 tomatoes a week off a large plant by september. Pumpkins make nice plants for areas that are wide and open and will be ripe by about september in your area.

How do i turn an unruly garden into a lawn?

I live in NYC. Years ago, my father turned our backyard into a fertile garden with lots of vegetables. Now he no longer lives with me. I would like to turn the back yard into a regular yard with grass. However the soil is very lumpy and has a lot of rows from gardening. Even though it was from ten years ago. The problem is, ever since my dad left the yard grows wildly every summer.. Trees, vines, weeds, you name it. And every year the only way to avoid a 7 foot jungle is to poison it in the spring before it starts to grow. I would like to have all the vines trees and weeds stop growing and simply have a grass lawn in the backyard that’s solid enough to put lawn furniture and a grill. How do i do this?

GREEN roofs or WHITE roofs? Which is better for environment?

* Green roofs are roof gardens. They help absorb a little CO2, provide some local vegetables, and are able to somewhat diminish solar rays, thus making the building slightly cooler.

* White roofs are roofs painted white. White has the highest albedo rate and reflects almost all solar radiation back into space. This significantly cools the building by 20-30 degrees F than rooftops that are black, lowers heating bills and preserves cooling equipment. www.nyc.gov/html/coolroofs/images/branding/White_Roof_Graph.jpg

First off you want to think about what you are going to plant and what space is required for them to grow properly. Also you must find out the sun requirements, water requirements, and how often you will need to feed.

Need help planning garden layout?

I’m planning on having a vegetable garden this year, and need to know the best place to plant so each variety gets the best sun/soil combo. I plan to make raised beds, but not sure with what material yet. Cheaper is better. The garden would include herbs, veggies, and root crops, pretty much anything I eat on a regular basis. Potatoes, peppers, onions, lettuce, corn, cucumbers, green beans, pumpkins, watermelon, etc. I have a large area to plant, but tall pine trees surrounding my yard that shade the area inconsistently. I live in Eastern WA, so the summers are super hot and the winters freezing. What crops should I plant next to each other? I heard growing the corn with the beans helps them to stabilize and reduces the need for trellis or stakes. Where should the corn and beans grow? To the North, East, South or West of the main beds? Thanks!

1. Till the soil to achieve a fine granular texture. Add compost or manure, and a cheap fertilizer, then rototill that into the soil until you have blended soil, compost, and manure completely.

2. I recommend short rows with wide spaces in between for easy hoeing, fertilizing, picking weeds and harvesting.

3. I suggest a 7 foot fence made of chicken wire to surround the entire garden. I wouldn’t worry about your dog and cats, rabbits and deer are more the problem. They eat young plants and ruin tomatoes by biting into it then leaving it.

Contact your local County Extention Agency and ask about the local Master Gardening club. They can tell you what works best for where you live, from what varieties to plant to the best time- and location- to plant, prune etc. They can also offer book titles, websites, the best nurseries etc. If no MG club, the agent should be able to point you in the right direction. By the way, the second growing season is to grow a second crop. It’s wonderful to live in Southern USA!

The mention above about hybrid plants is valid. Hybrids will not grow true to the plants that you had this year. Check to see what you had. If they aren’t hybrids then the following will apply-

Peppers and squash can be taken from the mature vegetables and dried.

Beans can be let to dry on the vine and the seeds taken from them when they are completely dry.

I put my leftover seeds in a zip lock bag and into a plastic container in the frig. Some seeds can last many years that way. Germination will diminish over the years but yes, it is possible to use your leftovers next year. What destroys seeds fastest is moisture and heat. Keep them in a cool dry place and they will last quite a while. I am planting cantaloupe seeds this year which are two years old. They were kept in my study in a desk drawer. The house never gets hotter them 78F. I fully expect the seeds to germinate. You can also put your seeds in containers as described in the freezer. Dry seeds in a freezer or frig will last many years. Keep them. They are too expensive to discard.

Some small packs of seeds won’t cost you an arm and a leg, but having your children put in the effort, and then have nothing come up to show for it, is a lesson that is sure to backfire. I don’t recommend that you rely on left overs or freebies for this project. The main thing is to plant crops they like to eat.

Number One Fan answers:

Tomatoes and peppers can be started inside.

However, if you’re new to gardening, I highly recommend buying small plants from your local garden store or nursery when it’s time to plant. You’ll want to plant those around the “last frost date”, which is probably in early May for you. They are tender plants, and frost can kill them.

Cucumbers and other squashes, and beans, you’ll want to plant the seeds directly in the ground the same time you plant out the peppers. (they grow quickly, and don’t like transplanting particularly)

Onions – I would by onion “sets”. If you go with seeds – it’ll be a couple years before you harvest. Plant the sets in the ground as soon as you can get a shovel in. (like now). They like cool/cold weather, and don’t care about frosts. Ditto for garlic and shallots. You could also sow leafy greens directly in the ground about 4-6 weeks before last frost date.

Starting seeds indoors can be tricky, and I would gain experience in the garden proper before attempting that. But if you’re determined to try – you need your SUNNIEST window. Start 4-6 weeks before you plant to plant out. Keep the soil carefully moist. If they don’t get enough light, they get thin and leggy. About a week before you plant them outside – you need to “harden them off”, which is a process of acclimating them to the outside. Take them outside and give them a few hours of direct sun. Increase the time in the sun each day, bringing them inside at night. After about a week of this, they can be outside all the time, and are ready to plant.
